The Whanganui district boasts a wealth of heritage assets that is the envy of many. The town centre alone features over 120 heritage buildings and monuments. Our historic environment is highly valued by the local community and plays a key role in the district's tourism sector.
Economic regeneration and seismic challenges are pressing issues for local heritage management. Our aim is to accommodate new growth, continue to invigorate our town centre and find workable solutions to seismic challenges, all while retaining and celebrating our valued heritage assets.
To do this we need a qualified and motivated Heritage Advisor. You will develop a district-wide heritage strategy, a first for Council. You will work with stakeholders including building owners and Heritage EQUIP to facilitate seismic solutions. You will work alongside our Town Centre Project Manager and regulatory planning team helping facilitate the re-use of heritage buildings. You will ensure our heritage policies and inventory are up-to-date, reviewing and producing character appraisals.
We aspire to having Whanganui recognised as a leader in heritage management. If you are a passionate heritage professional wishing to embrace, promote and contribute to our heritage success then apply now. For an informal discussion about the role contact Hamish Lampp, Planning Manager, on 06 349 3022 (Please do not send applications to this person). The role is full time for a three year fixed term.
